#1 MATE RECOMMENDATIONS...the two party rule, jacuzzi friends and the friendship dip

Welcome to the first edition of Mate Recommendations - a regular roundup of what I’m reading, watching and otherwise engaging with from the world of friendship, connection and social health. This franchise has been in the works for longer than I’m proud of, kicked into the long grass by a strongly-held conviction that I’m utterly unqualified to dish out recommendations rooted in culture (both internet and real). I am, on average, two years late to every banging boxout, viral meme and summer read; in the case of my most recent page-turner - Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life - I was a full decade late to the zeitgesit. (If Malcolm Tucker’s zeitgiest tapes were available on subscription, it would be the best £9.99 I spend all month.) But while a part of me will forever feel like this guy Shazamming Mr Brightside, with a camera roll saturated with screenshots from the friendship internet, I thought it was time to get over myself and share the stuff that makes it to my ‘saves’.
